Some people struggle with dating again after their divorce. While some divorcees struggle getting back out there, others end up dating a bit too quickly. Sometimes, they may even end up in rebound relationships. While they may seem harmless at first, they can have some negative results…
Rebound Relationships: Dating Too Soon?
Rebounding, defined
Rebound relationships are what happens when you enter a new relationship shortly after your last one. This can include not just a marriage, but any kind of dating too. Now, there isn’t a “definitive” time frame for rebounds. However, any relationship formed quickly after can fall into this category.
There’s a number of reasons as to why someone might end up in a “rebound”. Many times, they might feel lonely, and use this new fling to try and get rid of those feelings. Or, they might hope a new relationship will make them forget about their old one.
The issue with rebounds
The thing about rebound relationships is that they can come with a lot of negatives. For instance, you won’t be able to process your last one properly while in a rebound. That means not only will you still have the baggage from your marriage, but you’ll also carry it into this new one. This is a common source of problems in these relationships.
Furthermore, people’s decision making isn’t always the best right after a divorce. Therefore, you might possibly miss some red flags about this new partner of yours. Those red flags can end up coming back to being a reason why this new relationship ends in a break-up.
How to avoid them
You can avoid rebound relationships by taking some time to focus on yourself. After all, your divorce is going to leave you with a lot of complicated emotions. It’s much better in the long run to sort them out now, rather than to ignore them and let them only get worse.
At the same time, you’ll also learn to be comfortable with yourself. It’s important to understand that there’s nothing wrong with being single during this time. Your future relationships will be better off if you put the time in now getting yourself in a better head-space.
